Snooping

See what a website can learn from your visit.

01 · No location permission needed

Browser & network

Your IP, network operator, approximate location and browser details.

SNOOP sends your IP to two commercial data services: ipstack estimates location; IPinfo identifies the network.

Your SNOOP results will appear here.

02 · Your permission required

Device location

Compare with your device’s location estimate.

Device coordinates aren’t sent to our server, ipstack or IPinfo. Optional map privacy is explained below.

Your device results will appear here.

03 · Put it on the map

Compare locations

See where the two estimates land.

Opening the map lets OpenStreetMap see your IP and the areas you view, including your device’s area.

Run SNOOP or DEVICE LOCATION to add a point.

Technical details

Why & how

I built this to practise coding and show how much a simple visit reveals. Big tech and advertisers can combine these clues with your activity to build a fuller picture.

Businesses use IP-address data to tailor content, target advertising and detect fraud. This demo shows what two services can infer from your connection alone.

IP location is approximate. VPNs, Wi-Fi and mobile data can change the result; device location may be more accurate. The network operator may differ from your broadband brand. ASN is the network’s identifying number, not your personal ID.
